Amnesia 1983 – Before The Beginning

In the year 1983, ‘Amnesia’ was the alternative to the disco venues of Ibiza, playing live music, rock and pop of that era, to a crowd that was not into the traditional disco sound that you could hear in the other clubs of the Island.  They were a young public, so to say, the descendants of the original hippies from the different nationalities that came to Ibiza.  In general they were mostly European, some Americans, Catalans, Valencianos, a few ones from Madrid and quite a few South Americans.  Many of them were musicians, artists, poets, painters, stylists or writers, with a good intellectual level and very liberate.  The Ibicencos, after receiving heterogeneous visitants for many years, had started to mix with them.  As an anecdote, we can say that there was very few Englishmen on the island, those who were, generally lived in San Antonio.  In those times, the hills of San Rafael were dividing the island into two very recognizable groups. That was the year of my contact with the DJ Booth, which the year after, started to be my working place for 6 incredible years. The new owner of the club was not happy about the music and tested different DJ’s on the island.  In those days I was the owner of a clothes shop and I decided to organize a party called “Impossible”, making reference to the difficulties that the club was having in that time;  this said, sincerely, I was also doubting on the fact that I would get the job.  Despite my fears, “Impossible” was a success.  The dance floor was packed and the people were delighted….  but they didn’t give me the position I wanted so I had to wait another year, which I spent working behind a bar in Formentera.  Amnesia had a pretty quiet year.  I never stopped thinking that I could make it.

En el año 1983 , Amnesia era la discoteca alternativa de Ibiza. Bandas en vivo, música rock y pop de la época y un publico que no se interesaba en la música disco tradicional que se escuchaba en las otras grandes discotecas de Ibiza, joven contestarais, es decir ,los descendientes de los originales hippies, de diferentes nacionalidades en general, europeos , algunos americanos, catalanes, valencianos y madrileños, y un buen grupo de sudamericanos . Muchos de ellos artistas: músicos, pintores, estilistas, escritores con un respetable nivel intelectual, muy liberal. Como algo anecdótico, podemos decir que había muy pocos ingleses, que en general se quedaban en San Antonio. En aquellos tiempos las colinas de San Rafael dividían la isla en dos mitades muy reconocibles por sus habitantes.Los Ibicencos, que luego de años de recibir   visitantes tan heterogéneos, se mezclaban con ellos y en Amnesia no podían faltar. Fue ese año en el que tuve mi primer contacto con la cabina que luego, al año siguiente llego a ser mi lugar de trabajo por 6 increíbles años. Los nuevos propietarios no estaban  conformes con la música y hacían pruebas con diferentes disc jockeys de la isla. En aquellos días yo tenia una tienda de ropa  y decidí que para darle mas importancia a la prueba programaría junto a mi ex mujer y su pareja,( un gran artista que hacia su trabajo en las discotecas e la isla ), una fiesta con un desfile de modas, muy alternativo,…. como tenia que ser para un lugar como el Amnesia!. La fiesta se llamo Imposible, hacia referencia a las dificultades de que el club pudiera atraer mas publico…. aunque ,sinceramente, también  al hecho  que también era muy difícil que me dieran el trabajo!  Imposible fue un éxito, Jaime mi hijo tuvo su primera actuación publica a las 5 años como modelo, la pista estuvo llena hasta el final, la gente estaba encantada pero no me dieron el puesto que tanto quería. Tendría que esperar un año mas. Me fui a Formentera a trabajar en un bar. El Amnesia paso un año bastante flojo. Nunca deje de pensar que algún día lo lograría.
